Despite everything the shows go on!

It’s been a difficult week for Bay Area theatre! Late last week, news broke that not only is there a proposal to entirely eliminate the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), but many previously awarded grants from that agency are being revoked. This news is destabilizing for our entire arts ecosystem.

Many Theatre Bay Area member companies were affected, the San Francisco International Arts Festival, whose international artists were literally boarding their flight to the US when they received news about the canceled funding. It’s frustrating to see so many projects put in jeopardy.

There are many ways to fight back against this, but one important thing to do is to support the artists by being in the audience. When I look at this week’s line up of shows, I am reminded just how essential the arts are in this moment. To be living in a place where, just this weekend, I can choose from over twenty productions is such a gift. I hope to see you in the audience with me this week.
