A message from the board of Theatre Bay Area:

Many in our community are asking questions about AB5, the new California employment law that went into effect January 1 and outlines new rules around classifying workers as employees or independent contractors. Aimed at the growing “gig economy,” the law extends far beyond, reaching almost every sector of the state’s economy – including the nonprofit performing arts.

As we learn more about the impact of AB5 and its complexities on the nonprofit arts sector, Theatre Bay Area is working to ensure that our membership – comprised of artists and arts workers as well as arts organizations – have the resources and support that they need in order to comply with the law.

We will be continuing to conduct a series of workshops to help our members move through compliance with AB5 (TBA presented two town hall type convenings in December; more are planned for the weeks ahead). We look to our members to let us know where you need advice and help. We will work to provide timely resources.

We will also continue to work closely with Californians for the Arts/California Arts Advocates around a “clean-up” bill which can address some of the ambiguities and challenges of the current bill, as expressed by our membership.
