Berkeley-based actor and director Clay David has been selected as the new artistic director at the Altarena Playhouse. He takes over the helm of Alameda's 77-year-old community theatre from current artistic director Frederick L. Chacon. David was a 2014 recipient of Theatre Bay Area's Titan Award, a $1,000 grant and yearlong mentorship with the artist of their choice given to a handful of individual artists in the Bay Area who have completed TBA's ATLAS program, during which they received 17 hours of training on the business side of their careers. David has an MFA from the University of Connecticut and a BA from the University of Louisiana. He was a professor and drama department chair at Contra Costa College for almost 20 years in addition to his rich body of acting and directing work.

"I feel that theatre in the Bay Area engages, educates and challenges our diverse community, using performance art as a gateway to understanding and bettering our world," David says in an email. "At the Altarena Playhouse, I will always attempt to provide audiences with intelligent, lively theatrical productions that are structurally innovative, thought provoking, fully engaging, and which provide strong roles for our excellent Bay Area actors."
