Playwright Lauren Yee has been awarded the prestigious Will Glickman Award for her play, in a word, which received its world premiere at San Francisco Playhouse in April 2015. Yee and SF Playhouse will receive their awards at the Theatre Bay Area Annual Conference on March 28, 2016 at Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Yee, a former TBA CA$H grant and New Works Fund grant recipient as well as a Faces of Theatre Bay Area honoree, will also receive the award’s $4,000 purse.

The winning play, described as an “engrossing missing-child drama, an emotional mystery wrapped in word puzzles peeled away like the layers of an onion,” (Robert Hurwitt, San Francisco Chronicle), follows a young mother, Fiona, as she battles with confusion and grief following the disappearance of her eight-year-old son, Tristan. On the second anniversary of his disappearance, Fiona delves back into her memories of that fateful day to uncover that crucial missing piece; as she does, grief and comedy collide, and ordinary turns of phrase take on dangerous new meanings.

“San Francisco is my hometown,” says Yee. “It’s where my family lives, where I first cut my teeth in theatre, where I feel audiences really get my work, so receiving the Glickman Award is particularly meaningful.”

This is the first Will Glickman Award for playwright Yee and the second for SF Playhouse, which took home the 2014 award for Aaron Loeb’s Ideation. Both plays were produced under the auspices of SF Playhouse’s new-work Sandbox Series.

SF Playhouse artistic director Bill English says, “We founded the Sandbox Series to fill the need for more new plays to receive productions and so it is especially gratifying to see Lauren and everyone who has devoted themselves to the Sandbox recognized for their achievement.”

“I am thrilled to present this year’s Will Glickman Award to Lauren Yee for in a word,” says Theatre Bay Area executive director Brad Erickson. “Lauren is a San Francisco native, and one of the most exciting playwrights hailing from our region. I am proud to acknowledge that, since 2010, five of the winners of these prestigious awards, including Lauren, have been playwrights of color—a powerful testament to our entire theatre community.”

In a word has been published by Samuel French, as well as three of Yee’s other plays, all of which have received Bay Area productions: Ching Chong Chinaman (Impact Theatre, 2008; City Lights Theater Company, 2013), The Hatmaker’s Wife (AlterTheater, 2011) and Samsara (Bay Area Playwrights Festival, 2012).
