What is AB5?
AB5 changes the test used to determine whether a worker is an employee or an independent contractor. The intent of the bill is to extend to independent contractors the rights, benefits, and protections currently only available to employees. This law will have an impact on the arts sector, both companies and individuals. The town hall will explore how the law effects the arts and will outline advocacy for a follow-up bill to address negative impacts of the law.

About the Speakers

Julie Baker (she/her/hers) is a passionate arts professional. Prior to becoming Executive Director of CFTA in October of 2018, Julie Baker served on the board for four years as chair of the membership committee and Confluence, an arts advocacy conference. She is the owner of Julie Baker Projects, a full-service arts consulting firm. From 2009-2017, Julie Baker served as the Executive Director of The Center for the Arts, a non-profit performing arts venue and California WorldFest, an annual music and camping festival.

Baker worked in New York City at several prominent art galleries and the international auction house Christie’s before becoming the President of her family’s art marketing agency, Gerngross & Company Inc. From 1998-2001, she worked as a Senior Executive Producer for Tristream, a 20- person web development and marketing/branding company. From 2001 -2009 she owned and operated Julie Baker Fine Art, a gallery of emerging artists, and for 2 years co-founded Flow art fair in Miami. She currently serves on the board of California Heritage: Indigenous Research Project.

 

Brad Erickson (he/him/his) serves as executive director for Theatre Bay Area, one of the nation’s largest regional performing arts service organizations, with 300 theatre company members and some 2,000 individual members. Since 2003, he has led the organization’s efforts to support, promote and advocate for the region’s vibrant theatre community. Under Erickson’s leadership, TBA has gained a national reputation for innovative programs and services and commissioning groundbreaking research for the field. A renowned advocate for the arts, Erickson serves as treasurer of Californians for the Arts and California Arts Advocates and as California State Captain for Americans for the Arts. In 2016 he received the Alene Valkanas Awards for Statewide Arts Advocacy from Americans for the Arts. Before coming to TBA, Erickson served as executive director for the Northern California Minority Supplier Development Council, a nonprofit affiliate of the National Minority Supplier Development Council, dedicated to the advancement of businesses owned and operated by persons of color, with a vision of building economic empowerment in communities of color. Erickson received a BFA in Acting from the Goodman School of Drama (now The Theatre School) at DePaul University.

Gabrielle Gomez (she/her/hers) is a transactional entertainment attorney based out of Oakland, CA. She works exclusively with writers, artists, and production companies, especially women and non-gender-conforming persons of color in the performing arts, to protect their works and facilitate artist collaborations.

 

Before becoming an attorney, she was a playwright, producer, director and co-founder of two small theater companies in the Bay Area: Panhandler’s Theatre Company and Ann Marie Productions. In her spare time, Ms. Gomez continues to write, loves adding to her to-be-read pile, and acts as a production and script consultant.

 

Ms. Gomez earned her J.D. from Villanova University School of Law; she earned a B.A. in English and a B.A in Drama from San Francisco State University. https://www.ggomezlaw.com/
