The Bay Area Critics Circle Awards 2008

The following are the nominations and winners (in boldface) of the 2008 Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle Awards.

This list was provided to Theatre Bay Area by the Critics Circle. There may be typographical errors in this list. If you find an error, please e-mail karen[at]theatrebayarea[.]org with the correction. She will forward the correction to the Critics Circle. Theatre Bay Area is not affiliated with the Circle; we post this information as a service to the community.

This year, Actors' Equity Association (AEA), representing over 900 actors and stage managers in the Bay Area, is proud to sponsor this year's Critics Circle Awards. The 2008 Final Nominees who are AEA members, theatres and candidates are herein designated.

Also this year, the SFBATCC inaugurated the three-part separation of award categories between Theatres with (1) Over 300 Seats; (2) Between 100-300; and (3) 99 Seats or Less.  As such, theatre companies of similar sizes will compete and receive recognition for their outstanding work.

In addition to the 75 outstanding performance awards for Bay Area productions in 2008, the 23 members of the SF Bay Area Theatre Critics Circle voted for 3 Special Awards.

The prestigious Paine Knickerbocker Award, named for the former theatre critic of the S.F. Chronicle, is presented annually to a person or organization that has made a continuing contribution to Bay Area theatre. This honor is presented to Robert Cole of Cal Performances, who is retiring this season after 20 years. Cole has greatly enriched the Bay Area theater scene as a producer/presenter of many top international theater groups, including the Berliner Ensemble, Dublin's Gate Theater, etc.

The Barbara Bladen Porter Award, named for the former arts critic of the San Mateo Times, is presented to an active, mid-career member of the theatre community. This year’s recipient is Dan Hiatt, one of the Bay Area's finest and most versatile actors, working locally since the early 1980s.

The Gene Price Award, named for the former critic and arts editor of the SF Bay Times, honors a person, production, event, or theatre company not eligible for competition in any other Critics Circle voting category. This year the award goes to two winners: Debbie Chinn and Charles Zukow. Chinn, the departing Executive Director of California Shakespeare Theater, was also an excellent director; helped develop Bay Area audiences for Shakespeare, and guided the organization into the black. Zukow has been a Bay Area publicist for many years.
