Want to gain vital experience, learn professional skills and build key contacts to work in theatre in the Bay Area—
Theatre Bay Area (TBA) offers professional internships to motivated, reliable, mature students whose passions include both theatre and supporting fellow theatre-makers in their work and careers.
Each internship includes mentorship by professionals in the intern’s chosen field. Descriptions are below; info on qualifications, perks and application instructions follows.

TBA, a national leader in Bay Area theatre content for 40 years, is constantly working to make the Bay Area’s one of the most connected and informed theatre networks in the country; interns benefit from a multifaceted exposure to a wide range of communications channels and techniques.
Communications interns will learn key professional skills, including:
- How to a nonprofit maintains its online presence, from databases to Tweets to industry articles
- How to use, maintain and communicate about valuable online industry resources—such as our What’s Playing show listings, the Bay Area Performing Arts Spaces database, our direct mail newsletters and TBA web content
- How nonprofits plan and execute communications around major events with many stakeholders
- How to pitch, research and develop a journalism article for publication
Management interns will benefit from exposure to the Bay Area theatre ecosystem from a leadership standpoint, with access to TBA’s top decision-making staff as they articulate and strategize toward local and field-wide goals.
Management interns have the opportunity to:
- Learn about how TBA develops its forward-looking strategies, including those around organizational sustainability and strategic partnerships
- Gain exposure to the planning and execution workflow for TBA’s key fundraising efforts
- Build critical skills in nonprofit development processes, including outreach to major donors, government funders and foundations
- Observe first-hand day-to-day processes around fiscal management at a landmark nonprofit
TBA acts as a major marketing resource for theatre companies throughout the Bay Area—which affords our interns the opportunity to build skills in one of the most in-demand careers in the arts: telling audiences about great work in compelling ways.
Marketing interns have the opportunity to:
- Learn how to use and educate about the many marketing channels and tools TBA provides to the Bay Area theatre industry, including our Postcard Distribution Network, the Audience Database, the TIX Booth and our weekly Theatregoer direct mail newsletters.
- Gain insight into tailoring advertising techniques to the specific needs of local theatre companies and analyze what works from a recipient-based perspective.
- Learn about cutting-edge data cultivation and how to use data to shape strong marketing
- Develop skills drafting marketing copy and graphics using industry-standard computer applications
TBA’s mission—to serve the Bay Area theatre community—drives all of our programs. There is no other theatre services organization on the entire West Coast whose programs enjoy the range and reach that TBA’s do. This gives interns unparalleled exposure to what it takes to plan and execute in a variety of program fields, including a prestigious awards program, artist grants, conferences and convenings, career training programs and region-wide auditions.
Programs interns have the opportunity to:
- Learn how community input shapes organizational initiatives and events
- Develop highly marketable skills in event planning, setup and onsite coordination
- Observe meetings of professional steering committees tasked with program development
- Gain experience in program coordination with a range of stakeholders
In addition to department-specific training, all Theatre Bay Area interns enjoy:

Internship applicants should:
- Be motivated, reliable, flexible, and positive
- Have a true passion for theatre and for supporting Bay Area theatre-makers
- Display professional communication skills and ethics and honor confidential conversations
Candidates must hold a high school diploma or equivalent; further education, especially in the arts, is highly desirable.
