About the CA$H | Theatre Program

CA$H (Creative Assistance for the Small (Organization) and Hungry (Artist) Theatre, founded in 1999, provides vital financial support to individual theatre artists and small, professionally-oriented companies with operating budgets under $100,000.

CA$H | Theatre is an entirely artist-driven granting program. Each cycle, a panel of five artists and administrators is assembled to review the applications and make all granting decisions. Panelists go through rigorous training to assure equitability.

Chris Chen – 2015 Recipient

"The $2000 CA$H grant I received helped me produce the world premiere production of Home Invasion, which we performed in nine private living rooms across the Bay Area. The grant helped me get my work seen by key artistic directors, donors, and theatre supporters!"

Today, Christopher Chen is an internationally celebrated playwright whose works have been produced and developed at stages across the country including A.C.T. and Berkeley Rep.

Nina Meehan – 2005 Recipient for Active Arts Theatre for Young Audiences

“When Bay Area Children's Theatre first started, a CASH grant gave us the fuel for our very first show!  Today, we are reaching 90,000 people per year with our shows and classes, but without that first grant from Theatre Bay Area, we would have been stuck in the idea phase.  Passion needs resources to turn ideas into reality!”

Today, Nina Meehan is the Executive Director of Bay Area Children's Theatre--formerly Active Arts Theatre for Young Audiences-- which has emerged as a leader in theatre for young audiences in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Min Kahng – 2015 & 2016 Recipient

"Thanks to the CA$H Grant, I was able to partner with Bay Area Children's Theatre to develop Story Explorers, a new musical for autistic children and their families. The funds enabled us to assemble a stellar team of collaborators who helped to devise the show and created a warm, welcoming environment for our audiences. We were able to impact the lives of over 60 families through the course of our three-weekend run."

Today, Min Kahng is a celebrated playwright and performer whose new musical, The Four Immigrants, will premiere at TheatreWorks July 2017.

Please review the dance application materials and guidelines carefully as changes have been made. Applicants applying to theatre must submit their application to Theatre Bay Area. For the dance application, visit

Additionally, please note all CA$H|Theatre applicants need to be TBA members in good standing in order to be eligible--organizational applicants must be company members and individual artists must be yearly individual members.
