This step, daring for any director, is right in step with Novick’s pioneering spirit. Even before 2011, when she began developing the Triangle Lab as a joint R&D wing/community engagement project shared by California Shakespeare Theater and San Francisco-based Intersection for the Arts, Novick’s track record in Bay Area theatre reflected her affinity for the new. Her roster of forward-looking work includes founding Crowded Fire Theater in 1997 and serving as Theatre Bay Area’s director of development and strategic initiatives from 2005 to 2010; in January 2014, when Triangle Lab was brought wholly under Cal Shakes’s roof, she was named the company’s first-ever director of artistic engagement.
“That process of launch and integration has been exciting and exploratory for the company, Novick says, noting that current Triangle Lab activities will continue as part of Cal Shakes’ core programming, although the “branding may begin to shift.” She also says that she is excited by the arrival of new artistic director Eric Ting: “Part of why he wanted to come to Cal Shakes is because of his passion for and experience in engagement, and all the varied meanings of that work, so I feel a lot of faith and optimism about what the next phase will look like.”
About the road ahead, Novick says, “I’m excited to continue my work in the sector where arts and social justice meet, and I’m especially interested in what it means to be working as a director in that field.” Her next project will be directing a play with Los Angeles-based Cornerstone Theater, a company known for its collaborations with urban and rural communities around themes of social justice.
