Having blown up his 20-year marriage and lost his job as a university economist, Hank owes his (almost) ex-wife $183,000, so now he’s working as an extra at the opera alongside Sheryl, a frustrated actress. As Hank tries to rekindle his relationship with his sixteen-year-old daughter Marlene, he's also awkwardly reentering the dating scene with Lydia, an unsuccessful short story writer who has just lost her father. These complicated and slightly odd, drifting characters speak in idiosyncratic dialogue, with overlaps, non-sequiturs and pregnant pauses.
