This story follows the Bennet family: five daughters in want of husbands, their witty but disengaged father and their mother, who's obsessed with marrying off her daughters. When a rich young man and his even richer friend arrive in the neighborhood, and a company of militia is stationed in the nearby town, possibilities for love and marriage seem limitless. Comically skewering the class-consciousness of her world, Austen creates a combination of social satire and romantic comedy, highlighted by the tempestuous relationship between lively Elizabeth Bennet and prideful Mr. Darcy. Their story, perhaps influenced by Much Ado About Nothing, is one of the most cherished love stories in English literature.
