A new movie directed by local theatre director Amy Glazer and featuring a slew of Bay Area actors is premiering in cinemas this December. The film is based on a play by Theresa Rebeck that Glazer directed at SF Playhouse in 2008, and features some of the original actors from that production.
Seducing Charlie Barker is a black comedy about a talented but underworked actor trying to make it in the Manhattan theatre scene (hence the title of Rebeck's original play, The Scene). He is supported by his casting director wife, who takes him to an industry party where he meets Clea, a beautiful young woman who first irritates him and then becomes the cause of his downfall. He is captivated by this seductress, pursuing her at the cost of his marriage, his career and ultimately his sanity.
Melrose Place veteran Daphne Zuniga and former Miss Marin County Heather Gordon reprise their respective roles as Charlie's wife and Clea from the original SF Playhouse production. Charlie Barker is played by Cal Shakes associate artist Stephen Barker Turner. Joining them in roles not originally in the play are Bay Area regulars Patrick Alparone, Alex Moggridge and Liam Vincent.
This is Glazer's third film; the other two also based on plays she directed. Glazer is associate artistic director at SF Playhouse, where she's also directed plays such as Tigers Be Still, Animals Out of Paper and Shining City.
Seducing Charlie Barker opens at select Bay Area cinemas on December 2. For more info, visit seducingcharliebarker.com.
