Born Ready - Backstage at the TBA Awards!

Posted By TBA Staff, Wednesday, November 12, 2014
Updated: Wednesday, November 12, 2014

I don't know what we were thinking, letting these guys backstage at the TBA Awards Celebration, where they chatted up everyone from Kimberly and Patrick Dooley to Shaun and Abigail Bengson. Or maybe they just snuck in, dressed as Thrillpeddlers. Who knows? Either way, what you have before you is yet another Born Ready podcast, recorded au naturel in the A.C.T. Geary Theater green room on Monday, Nov. 10.

I believe Messrs. Ready and Hobbs would like to thank their sponsor, Jameson Irish Whiskey.

Listen to the podcast here.

Listen to an earlier Born Ready podcast on the TBA Awards with Robert Sokol, TBA Awards program manager.

Last night proved that Bay Area theatre really knows how to put on a show! From beginning to end, it was truly a sparkling celebration: the dazzling performers, the talented award recipients, the stunning venue, the fabulous clothes—even the delicious pomegranate champagne cocktails (did you have one? Wow!).

director Lisa Steindler at the TBA Awards Celebration.

TBA would like to heartily thank the recipients of the TBA Legacy Awards for their inspiring commitment to Bay Area theatre: Joan Mankin, Jill Matichak, and Beach Blanket Babylon.

We would also like to congratulate all of the finalists whose work was recognized as outstanding by hundreds of their colleagues, and the recipients of the TBA Awards, to whom we wish continued artistic success.

The TBA Awards Celebration is just one week away! Which means we need to talk about something really important: what to wear!

Our rallying cry for this event—since we know our members are full of both old school gorgeousness and funky creativity—is "dress to impress." With photographers lining the red carpet snapping shots as you promenade into the historic, lavish venue, you're about to make Bay Area theatre history. So do it your way! "Dress to impress" in whatever way makes you feel like you rock this planet—because you do.

Attend in a tux or floor-length gown—perfect! Get all dolled up in vintage eveningwear, complete with gloves and hat—gorgeous! Lace up your least-paint-spattered pair of Chucks—right on! Dare to wear a color other than black—shock your friends

So dig through those closets. Call up your well-heeled girlfriend to borrow that fab frock—or ask your big brother for that tux he wore at his wedding. There's still enough time to get that special piece dry-cleaned/altered/mended—or made, if you are lucky enough to be a costume designer or live with one!

Whatever you do, however you do it, dress to impress! We can't wait to see you strut your stuff next Monday.

New - TBA Legacy Awards!

Posted By TBA Staff, Tuesday, October 21, 2014
Updated: Monday, October 20, 2014

The 2014 TBA Awards Celebration just got even more fabulous! Theatre Bay Area has just announced the recipients of the brand-new TBA Legacy Awards, which honor extraordinary achievement in and contribution to the Bay Area theatre community, reflecting the recipient's entire body of work over time. These very special awards will be presented at the glamorous soiree taking place on November 10. (Ceremony info and tickets available here.) Afterward, come dance the night away at the after-party at Ruby Skye! (After-party info and tickets available here.)

The TBA Legacy Awards:

 Joan Mankin.

Joan Mankin will be the recipient of a TBA Legacy Award for lifetime achievement in acting, in recognition of her stellar work in the Bay Area. Ms. Mankin joined the San Francisco Mime Troupe fresh out of college in 1970, then went on to become the lead clown and juggler with both the Pickle Family Circus and Make-a-Circus; she's also performed at most of the major Bay Area houses, including American Conservatory Theater, Aurora Theatre Company, San Francisco Playhouse, Magic Theatre, TheatreWorks, California Shakespeare Theater, Marin Theatre Company and San Jose Stage Company. A performer who has made a unique and enduring contribution to Bay Area theatre through her own work, Ms. Mankin has also been a beloved teacher; many theatre makers working today count her as one of their most treasured influences. Don't miss this opportunity to applaud Ms. Mankin as she accepts this very well-deserved award!

 Jill Matichak.

Jill Matichak may not be someone everyone recognizes on sight, but Bay Area theatre would not be the same without this behind-the-scenes hero. She will receive a TBA Legacy Award for her contributions to the Bay Area theatre community as a patron, supporter and trustee. Matichak is not only a renowned finance lawyer, but also an off-Broadway producer, a past board president of Magic Theatre, a generous subscriber to and supporter of a number of Bay Area theatres and an all-around advocate for theatre in the Bay Area. Join with us in showing appreciation for the time, resources, energy and skills she has dedicated in support of the work we make.

 BBB's "Pineapple Princess."

Finally, TBA is proud to present Steve Silver's Beach Blanket Babylon with a TBA Legacy Award for achievement and contribution to the community as a producing theatre, on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. Since its beginning in 1974—a tenure that may well make it the longest-running musical revue in theatre history—BBB has been a "must-see" San Francisco institution, dazzling nearly six million people from the Bay Area and beyond. BBB also contributes to the arts through its scholarship program, which gives promising Bay Area performing arts students a financial prize toward their college educations. Come raise a glass to a quintessential Bay Area theatrical phenomenon!

The TBA Awards is a program of Theatre Bay Area. The 2014 TBA Awards Celebration will be held on November 10, 2014 at A.C.T.'s Geary Theater in san Francisco. Information and tickets to the celebration and after-party available here.
