A New Name and a New Look!
Callboard is reborn as Theatre Bay Area Magazine
San Francisco, CA, December 18, 2003 – Theatre Bay Area (TBA) Executive Director Brad Erickson announced today that the monthly magazine formerly known as Callboard has a new name and a new look starting with the January issue. Now called Theatre Bay Area, the magazine launches January 1 with a bold new cover design. To celebrate, the magazine is hosting a launch party open to the public at Limelight Books, 1803 Market Street in San Francisco on Thursday, January 8, 4-6pm.
Executive Director Brad Erickson commented: “For 28 years, theatre workers and theatre-lovers alike have relied on Callboard magazine to deliver the most extensive and up-to-date information on auditions, jobs, classes and show listings, as well as a rich selection of articles exploring the many facets of the local theatrical scene. But we began to feel that the name Callboard, which was originally just a list of auditions for actors, did not reflect the true depth and richness of the magazine’s offerings. While the magazine will still include all the information people have grown to love and rely on, its new name and look reflect the energy of our thriving theatrical community.”
The magazine’s editor Karen McKevitt added, “The San Francisco Bay Area deserves a magazine that is devoted to the individuals and companies that make theatre; that gives theatre-goers a more in-depth look at the artists and shows; and that celebrates its theatre community as one that is professional, creative and thriving. Theatre Bay Area is that magazine. Its name now accurately reflects its content.”
First published in January 1976 as a mimeographed single page, the publication took on the name Callboard four months later. Callboard continued to grow, and in September 1987 expanded to a 7-inch-by-11-inch format. The magazine was completely redesigned in 1993, under the guidance of former Callboard Editor Belinda Taylor, to the roughly 8.5-inch-by-11-inch magazine we have today. Karen McKevitt became the editor in summer 2002.
Subscriptions to Theatre Bay Area magazine are $61. The subscription rate includes first-class postage, and all of the benefits of TBA individual membership, including discounts on theatre tickets and services and TBA professional development programs, inside information on auditions and job notices and access to TBA’s group health insurance plan.
